How to Keep Your Lungs Healthy

When people talk about getting fit, they often tend to overlook training their lungs. However, the lungs, just like any other muscle, need exercise in order to stay healthy and strong. Without proper care or attention, your lungs can deteriorate overtime – leading to disease, respiratory illnesses and even lung cancer.

There are a number of healthy habits you can adopt in order to better maintain your lung condition and give yourself the best chance at protecting them from declining over the years.

How do I keep my lungs strong?

Strengthening your lungs is all about helping your respiratory system to function as best it can. There are a number of things you should consider avoiding or cutting out to ensure your lungs stay fit and healthy.

No Smoking

One of the single most important steps you can take away is smoking will continue to damage your lungs and hinder them from being healthy. Smoking not only increases your risk for lung cancer but it also can heavily contribute to other lung diseases, including COPD, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and asthma.

When you inhale from a cigarette or a vape, the toxins effect your lungs. They increase mucus, make it more difficult for your lungs to clean themselves, and irritate and inflame tissues. These factors eventually make it difficult and uncomfortable to breathe normally. Whether you’re a recent or longtime smoker, the American Lung Association has some excellent resources on how to begin the process of quitting.  Now you have given your lungs the best chance at recovery, you can begin building your lung strength back up again.

Avoid Risk of Infection

Similarly, minimising your exposure to infection allows your lungs to focus on maintaining optimal function. This is particurly important in winter, when the risk for respiratory infection becomes much higher. To give your lungs the best chance at protection, wash your hands regularly and use alcohol based sanitisers to kill nasty bacteria. Avoids crowds during the cold and flu season, and make sure you’re up to date with your vaccinations so you are not extra vulnerable to getting sick.

Avoid Irritants Inside & Outside

Minimising your interactions with lung irritants is optimal for your health. Frequent exposure to dangerous air pollutants like cleaning supply fumes, car exhaust fumes, smoke, industrial pollution and dust can irritate your airways and may cause shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, asthma episodes and chest pain.

Try not to exercise outside or leave your windows open if the air quality outside is subpar. You can keep an eye on this by using the national Air Quality Index, integrated into most weather apps.

How do I make my lungs healthier?

Lung Exercise

Being physically active is instrumental in keeping your lungs healthy. This is because when you are physically active, your heart and lungs work harder to supply the additional oxygen your muscles demand. As your physical fitness improves, so does your lungs’ efficiency. National guidelines recommend that all adults get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five days a week.

When exercising, it’s important to focus on how you are breathing. Strengthening your lung capacity through the expansion of your lungs allows you to increase your oxygen intake and flow throughout your body. Yoga, swimming and aerobic exercise are all great examples of exercise for healthy lungs.

Regular Check Ups

If you have a personal or familial history of lung illness, you should make sure you have set up a recommended check up schedule with a medical professional. Many lung illnesses go undetected until it is serious.

These check ups can be super insightful to understand where your lung health is at, share any concerns and track your progress.

Turboforte Lung Physio

Another one of the best exercises you can implement to keep your lungs healthy is breathing through a lung expansion device like the Turboforte Lung Physio.

Nearly half of Americans with severe asthma do not respond to conventional drugs, leaving them with few ways to minimize the often-debilitating symptoms of the chronic disease. This small, portable, hand-held device is very popular for those with chronic lung conditions as it can be used as a complimentary or adjunct therapy along with the conventional medicine for their treatment and rehabilitation

Turboforte Lung Physio is easy to use – only 5-10 minutes, once or twice per day. When you exhale through the Turboforte Lung physio, your breath moves the steel ball inside making vibrations in the airways that loosen any stubborn mucus and cause a slight increase in pressure that assists in keeping your airways open and strengthening your overall lung health.
